The Best Time to Propose at Fisherman's Bastion (Without the Crowds)
ultimate surprise sunrise marriage proposal at fisherman’s bastion in budapest
Quick Answer
n/a.:)
the best time to propose at fisherman’s bastion is usually sunrise, but not always :)
there are a few things that you need to factor in, and that’s where my role starts to guide you and recommend the best time based on your expectation, the weather, the day of the week, the season, etc.
Best Times of Day
Sunrises are good, if: it is not overcast. however they might be a bigger crowd at sunrise (yes, even at 4:40 am as well!) A lot of people hit the bastion to record the magical sunrise over the other side of the river and then they go back home, and so:
Why Fisherman's Bastion Gets Crowded
Fisherman’s Bastion is Budapest’s top attraction as well as one of the most instagrammable spot in Europe. The architecture, the picturesqueness and the views make it a must-visit spot and lots of people rush there even as early as sunrise. Other reasons why it gets so crowded are:
Tour groups after 8:00 am
Weekend traffic especially during the summer
Seasonal travel traffic in spring, summer, autumn and Christmas week
Is there a Best Month for a Proposal?
No, not really. every season has its own vibe and feeling. even gloomy weather can create dramatic and cinematic vibe, so it is usually up to you if you want it in a warm day or cold weather doesn’t impact you. for more privacy, the best months are January through April, and then September through November. However it doesn’t mean that you can’t do it other months, but my guidance will make the whole difference

Early Morning become a great time for privacy. Once people are done with their instagram shot with sunrise. and go back to sleep, there is a period where there is no one :). unfortunately the light isn’t that soft anymore as the sun goes up, but if your concern is more privacy than soft sunlight, you have found the best time.

Sunsets are doable, if: you are ok to be limited to a certain time that your I will recommend as a professional photographer with lots, lots of experience in this :)
Without very detailed explanation, the light is very harsh for photos at Fisherman’s Bastion at sunset time. I will adjust your shoot at a very specific time of the day (kind of a complex calculation with the angle of the sun and the amount of clouds, etc) so you can still have soft lights. Also there is only one spot where sunset photos work at this location, because the bastion becomes like a stadium in the afternoon. the spot you see below is a paid area (3,5 eur per person) and people usually don’t want to pay it for the same view so that’s a great opportunity for those with a secret purpose :)

Evenings are my least favorite, I love light and ambiance of the day. But I am aware sometimes you will have time only during the evening so we make it happen. It gets really crowded at Fisherman’s Bastion in evenings. Therefore only the low season is an option. May through August isn’t very ideal and I would stick to the day time if you can :)

What Happens If Your Proposal Location Is Too Crowded?
This is one of the most common questions that I receive. Alright, let’s speak about it:)
we will consider other locations: I have a full list of Budapest’s best spots for a marriage proposal so we can always go for another option or another spot at the same location, but;
remember the fact that you will never see those people again: there can be people around, that doesn’t mean you must sacrifice, it is always a good approach to understand the fact and still go for a beautiful shot. I will be sure to manage the crowd, so there won’t be anyone else in the frame to distract the moment, but you should be prepared to ignore people around. Also usually the public reaction is either warm or nothing
If there is an event or a spot is blocked with cars, police, etc. then we will reconsider all options.
I have never had to cancel a proposal, or left with an upset client. we always find a way, here comes my expertise in the picture.
What I Usually Recommend
(Based on photographing proposals here for years...)
I understand privacy is important, so are early morning lights :) I do my very best to pick the spot with the lowest number of people but you should be prepared, there will be people no matter where we go, unless you want a tiny empty street. Don’t worry though, the crowd has never been a show stopper in 300 proposals that I have made in last 3 years. I always manage the process and my guidance will help you find the most ideal option.
